Whether your upcoming holiday involves disappearing off on an exciting road trip or you simply like the idea of being able to get around during your break, organising car hire for your trip can be a great way of staying in charge of your holiday itinerary and avoiding expensive day trips by coach.

First of all it helps to think about what you want from your hire car. There are a great many styles of vehicle available for hire these days, from fun-filled camper vans and funky drop tops to luxurious cars and economical run-arounds. But deciding what kind of car will suit you most might depend on the trip you have planned. For example, if it`s just the two of you and you fancy a bit of a road trip then perhaps something more frivolous like a convertible might be fun, however, if you`re travelling with the family and you`re just planning local day trips then a practical family car will be more useful.

Next, consider what extras you might need. Most cars come with the basics, but car hire differs around the world so not all things come as standard. If you are driving in a warmer climate you might find air conditioning will help you to be more comfortable, or having a stereo or radio. If you are travelling far and aren`t sure of the area a satellite navigation system may also come in useful, so make sure you check exactly what you get with your vehicle before you commit.

With the right vehicle chosen, it is worth remembering these simple tips when you go to pick up the car, such as making sure you have the necessary paperwork with you. It helps to check what you need in advance, especially if you are travelling abroad as you may need different I.D. or paperwork to that needed at home. Do a thorough check of your chosen vehicle before you sign it off to make sure your supplier is aware of any bumps or scratches that may be on the car.

For safety reasons, make sure you are aware of the type of fuel the car takes and how everything works. Have your advisor show you exactly where the spare tyre is stored, just in case you should need to use it. And finally, note down any necessary phone numbers in case of an emergency.

These days there are a number of ways to choose car hire, depending on whether you want to arrange rental in advance of your trip or take advantage of a local rental company once you`re at your destination. Most airports and major railway stations have rental offices within them and many of the larger rental companies have offices in many major cities and towns. However, you might find it easier to organise your hire vehicle before you go and the best way to do this is online, using companies such as erentals.co.uk. Online companies can offer good deals on vehicle hire and have a large range of cars available to choose from.

As well as giving the opportunity to experience a number of different locations, driving holidays can also offer an affordable alternative to a traditional break, particularly during peak times.

Sitting in motorway traffic or driving through built up industrial zones for hours on end are very few people`s idea of fun so it is important to plan where you want to go. Part of the joy of a driving holiday is the scenery that you discover whilst travelling between destinations. It is, therefore, important to draw up an itinerary setting out where you are headed and how you will get there.

There are a number of great destinations for driving holidays. If you are thinking of a European destination then you will find that there is plenty of choice and much to see and do.

The Loire Valley in France has a lot to offer, from mountain paths with scenic views to ancient chateaux and vineyards. Make sure you stop at medieval Blois with its winding streets and famous chateaux and the peasant villages dug into the hills between Montsoreau and Saumur.

Germany`s Black Forest is another popular destination. The thick forests, beautiful lakes and rolling hills bring to mind the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm. Places not to miss include the world`s largest cuckoo clock and Germany`s highest waterfall at Triberg, the thermal baths of Baden Baden and the gothic cathedral at Freiburg.

The UK`s Lake District is an alternative for those looking for stunning scenery. The romantic hills and valleys are impressive, whatever the weather. Make sure to experience some sailing on Lake Windermere, explore the Roman Fort at Birdoswald and enjoy the gardens at Holker Hall in Morecambe Bay.

If you are looking to travel further afield, then driving holidays don`t come on a grander scale than those found in the USA. Whether it`s a New England Road trip, exploring the scenic countryside and colonial history, or a Californian one that encompasses the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and Las Vegas, you will find yourself spoilt for choice.

If you decide to use your own car for your driving holiday then make sure that it is serviced before you set off. You should also make sure that your insurance will cover you in the location that you will be visiting.

When hiring a vehicle make sure that you choose the most appropriate one for your trip. Whilst the sporty dream car might appeal, comfort and space to accommodate all your belongings are a necessity if your driving holiday is to be a success.

Those looking to rent a car will want to make sure that they are getting the best deal. By using an online company such as hirecars.co.uk you have access to a worldwide car hire network that includes many of the big car hire providers. And, with the car hire taken care of, you will be able to relax and enjoy your driving holiday.

Holidaying in the UK can give you a relaxing break in pleasant countryside without the stress of flying or travelling for long periods.

Anyone looking for a beach holiday will find that the south coast of England is ideal. The coastlines of Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex are all characterised by golden sandy beaches. If you are holidaying in the south of England and the weather is not perfect for sitting on the beach, then there are also many different attractions throughout the area close to the beach resorts. These include museums, aquariums, zoos, safari parks, theme parks and historic castles.

Those who are travelling to Devon and Cornwall for their holiday will be able to appreciate the stunning scenery, cliff views and hidden beach coves but can also visit the many other places of interest in the region. The main attractions include the mysterious castle at Tintagel, the Cornish tin mines, the Lost Gardens of Heilligan and the historic naval city and dock in Plymouth. The counties of Devon and Cornwall are also perfect for those who wish to explore the countryside and take pleasant walks, rides or treks through the wilderness of the moors.

Wales is also a great choice for your summer holiday and there is plenty on offer for holiday makers of all ages. The historic city of Cardiff has many visitor attractions, including the castle. You can experience lovely sandy beaches on the Gower peninsular or you can tackle the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. Wales is also a marvellous place for those who want to be a bit more energetic, with many activity holidays and pony-trekking courses on offer in the Brecon Beacons.

Scotland is also a good place to visit during the summer holidays. The people are renowned for their hospitality throughout the lowlands and highlands there are many castles, historical sights, battlefields and theme parks to visit. Although the snow will have gone from the mountains, you can always try mountain biking, wildlife spotting or even dry-ski-slope skiing in the mountains all year round.

If you are serious about being outdoors, then a visit to the Lake District will provide the perfect experience. With many different hills, mountains and trails to walk you can spend your whole holiday in beautiful countryside with magnificent views. If you wish to, you can also take a journey on one of the many steamboats on Lake Windermere or visit the home of Beatrix Potter. When you visit the Lake District cottage rentals are a great way of having a home from home that can be used as a base to explore all around the area.

It is one of the most frequently cited life choices regardless of background.

However, travelling can be extremely stressful. Whether you`re going away for a week or a year there are many details to arrange before you leave, including packing, travel insurance and sometimes vaccinations. Once you have arrived at your destination, common issues involve getting lost in a foreign country, disagreements with travel partners, difficulties understanding the locals and lost possessions or money.

One of the most stressful places for any traveller is the airport, which can mean your holiday begins or ends negatively. There are, however, some simple things you can do to remove much of the stress of travelling and enjoy your experience to the full.

Firstly, make sure you are aware of your flight times. Have tickets printed out before you enter the airport and have back-up copies in case of emergency. Keep your airport documents in an easily accessible place. Make sure you get to the airport well in advance, as turning up with not much time to spare is a bad start to your journey.

Don`t be tempted to spend so much time in duty-free that you will have to make a last minute dash to the departure gate. Make sure your bags contain only the allowed items and sort items such as make-up in advance to avoid any delay in unpacking and repacking your bags.

If your flight is delayed, try not to panic. If you have rented a car, make sure you have told them your flight number in advance. This way, they will know that the flight is delayed and can have your car waiting for you when your flight lands. If you are travelling to a destination that involves a connecting flight, try to book the second flight slightly later than you arrive to allow time for flight delays.

Finally, for a stress-free travel experience, book into a hotel near the airport for the night before your flight. It is often worth paying a little extra to avoid the potential of missing flights or stressful arguments with family members. You will wake up feeling well rested and will be close to the airport so you can avoid any potential delays such as taxis arriving late, missed airport trains or heavy traffic. For example, if you are flying from Leeds, look into staying at hotels near Leeds Bradford Airport. This will help you to arrive at the airport well in time for your flight.

When you are travelling abroad on holiday one of the most important decisions you will have to make is where to stay whilst on your holiday. There are many considerations when choosing your accommodation and finding the right accommodation can be crucial to experiencing the perfect holiday.

One of the first considerations is how many are there in your party. If you are travelling with small children then you will ideally want an apartment or villa that will accommodate your whole party. However the number of bedrooms can vary; some families may want their children to have separate rooms, whereas other families may feel it is ok for the adults to sleep on a pull out bed in the living area.

Once you have decided on the number of bedrooms you want then you will need to decide whether you want a separate kitchen and living area or whether open plan is acceptable. This will normally depend on the age of our children and whether you feel comfortable preparing food without being able to see them.

The location of your rental property will also be an important consideration. For some families proximity to the beach will be important whereas others may feel that being close to shops and entertainment facilities are more important considerations. If you have a young family then choosing a location away from areas which are renowned for their nightlife is sensible. These are more suitable for younger travellers who wish to party the night away.

You may also wish to consider whether your property has a sea view, a mountain view or a view of the local countryside. This in turn may lead you to decide on how much shade you would like your property to have. Some properties come with shaded patios and terraces whereas others have little shade and may therefore not be suitable for families with younger children who will not want to be out during the hottest periods of the day.

If you are travelling to a particularly hot country then you may also wish to consider having air conditioning in your property, although if you intend to spend the majority of your time in the pool or at the beach then this may not be needed. Air conditioning can however be an essential for small children who cannot sleep during hot humid nights.

Whether you choose to rent a private villa or stay in an apartment in a hotel complex choosing the right accommodation to suit your family`s needs is essential to having a relaxing and fun holiday.

So you`re getting ready to go on your holiday, you`ve been looking forward to it for weeks and you`re raring to go. Only one hurdle left to jump – the packing. Packing is always a trade off between taking all our favourite clothes and a perfect outfit for every occasion and avoiding the excess baggage charges. In fact with many airlines charging a good whack on top of our ticket price to check in a bag at all, many travellers are opting to take the maximum sized hand baggage case and stuff that full with their clothes instead.

If you are squeezed for space and wondering how to pack everything you need for your holidays, then capsule packing will be a perfect strategy for you to adopt. Capsule packing is essentially the same as owning a `capsule wardrobe`, a collection of a few basic items that can be dressed up or down and recombined to make the perfect outfit for a variety of occasions. Choosing the right key pieces of clothing is essential to making this strategy work, so go for around 15 essential items to form the basis of your capsule.

If you are holidaying somewhere warm, you will need a pair of loose, comfortable trousers. Light coloured trousers such as beige, white or cream will give you a summery, fresh look and will give you more flexibility to choose tops to match than trousers in a strong colour would. In addition to your full length trousers, go for a pair or two of three quarter length trousers or leggings and one pair of smart / casual shorts. Stick to neutral colours such as khakis, pale palettes or plain dark colours such as black or navy blue.

For men, a couple of loose fitting, colourful tops will give you a good range of mix and match to go with your trousers and shorts. One short sleeved and one long sleeved shirt will give you the flexibility to dress up for the evening or to sling a shirt over a t shirt or top to create a new look and cover up as the sun goes down. Ladies can pack plenty of strappy tops and a couple of shirts or cardigans, that will let them create lots of new looks by layering and mixing and matching for different times of the day.

Ladies may want to replace the shorts with a couple of versatile skirts and to include one or two summer dresses that can be dressed down with a hat and flip flops or dressed up with high heels and chunky jewellery for the evening. One of the key parts of the woman`s capsule wardrobe is the accessories, as an outfit can be completely changed just by the clever addition of a belt, necklace or bag, so don`t be afraid to fill out those awkward spaces in your case with all your bits and pieces.

Don`t forget to include one or two warmer items in case the weather turns against you. Some of the men`s and women`s cardi`s and hoodies from places like Animal clothing are a perfect choice for a funky, fashionable and functional warm item that won`t look out of place on the beach or in the pub.

Instead of booking the first opportunity you see, spend time online having a good look around at all the options available. Discounts for families are everywhere and really can cut the cost of taking the family to Europe for that well-deserved period of rest and relaxation.

Kids Discounts
Travelling with kids can bump up the price unless you do your homework and scope out some of the deals that many travel companies offer to families.

Depending on the type of holiday you prefer, there are several kinds of deals to look for. Hotels and holiday complexes often have `kids stay free` deals that can cut down on accommodation costs when you`re looking for a holiday with all the comforts of home.

Alternatively, the more budget conscious may choose a camping option. There are many beautifully sited and well-equipped camping sites around Europe, whether you`re looking for a beach location or somewhere inland. These often have the added benefit of kids` clubs included in the price, which gives frazzled parents the chance to relax or explore the area knowing the children are safely entertained.

Catering
Eating out, or feeding the family on a daily basis, is one of the greatest and sometimes hidden expenses that European holiday-makers incur. Half-board at a hotel may look like a good deal, but remember to factor in the additional meals you`ll have to buy outside hotel meal times.

One way of taking control of eating-expenses is to look for all-inclusive deals. These often go beyond the basic provision of all meals and drinks, with many sites or hotel complexes also offering activities or entertainment in with the price. Whether or not you choose to have all your meals at the site or occasionally go further afield is a matter of preference, but the budget is within your control.

Self-catering is also a way to control the food budget, but if possible try to do your food shopping where the local people shop. While the language barrier may be a little off-putting to some, making the effort can save a packet. Larger, international supermarkets often have higher prices for basic foodstuffs, whereas the smaller, local shops and supermarkets charge a more normal, local rate.

Deal Searching
Shopping around before settling on a European destination and staying flexible regarding holiday plans during the searching phase, is key to getting the best deals.

Many tour operators offer special discounts to selected countries, or chosen hotels or areas within those countries. Snapping up early or late deals can save hundreds of pounds off the regular price, often with flights or other bonuses thrown in.

If you`re planning ahead go for early deals, scoping out Thomas Cook voucher codes or other deals on discount and voucher sites. Savvy holiday shoppers, willing to spend a little time on cost comparison, can often find escaping to Europe more economical than staying at home.

The city of London is huge and filled with attractions, historical sites and beautiful parks and gardens, as well as some of the best museums and galleries in Europe, so whatever your passion or interest, you will be able to fulfil it in this city. The downside of this is, no matter how long you stay, it`s unlikely you will ever exhaust all the possibilities, so for people planning a city break in London it is important to pre plan how you want to spend your time, otherwise you could spend a good deal of time travelling or at one attractions and miss out on other things you really wanted to do.

For many people visiting London, there are a few `must see` things to do whilst they are there. With the city being the seat of the British Monarchy, many people`s visit is not complete without a trip to see Buckingham Palace. If you are planning to go, head there in time for the Changing of the Guard that takes place daily at 11.30am during the summer and every other day in the winter. Arrive in good time to get a good spot right in front of the gates.

Not far from the Palace, take a stroll towards Trafalgar Square and you will pass the entrance to No. 10 Downing Street on the way. Although you are not allowed up the road to the famous door any more, you can still see it from the road and may be lucky enough to catch a politician or two entering or leaving the street. At Trafalgar Square, take 5 minutes to admire the huge lions by the fountain and the towering Nelsons Column, marking the heart of central London.

Just along from here, the stunning St. Pauls Cathedral is a must see building for a London first timer and to make the visit complete you really should take the trip up to the `Whispering Gallery`. Here the 259 steps will take you up high into the dome above the mosaic floor below. Its well known as the whispering gallery because, due to the curvature of the dome in this spot, everything said on one side of the dome can be easily understood on the other side, over 100 feet away.

To get a flavour of central London and to see some of the city`s most famous landmarks in comfort, take a boat trip from Greenwich up the Thames to the City. Greenwich is full of its own attractions and sights, so if you have time to visit the Royal Observatory or the Cutty Sark, then do so. Boats will take you from here, past the iconic skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and under Tower Bridge, before dropping you off next to Big Ben.

If you are looking for ways to spend your time after dark, then it doesn`t come better than London`s West End. From the vibrant nightlife of Chinatown to the glitz and glamour of the patrons queuing for the lion king tickets in Leicester Square, the nightlife is never dull here.

Other types of holidays just do not possess the same feeling of freedom and closeness to nature that sleeping under canvas can bring. However, there are a number of factors which it is important to consider before setting off.

Perhaps the most obvious factor is equipment. There are a number of different types of camping, but whether you are planning to hike carrying a two-man tent, or are driving a vehicle with a large trailer tent in tow, it is important to travel with the right kit. Right at the top of the inventory list should be the tent itself and its storage. The tent needs to be transported safely so that it functions correctly on arrival at your destination.

It is also crucial to ensure that everyone knows how to erect the tent and has practised doing so before setting off. All kinds of things can happen during a journey which may lead to delays in schedule. If it looks like you will arrive late at your destination then it can be dark and people will be tired. Having a thorough knowledge of how to erect the tent saves time and irritation and ensures people will have a decent night`s sleep.

Booking sites in advance is the sensible way to plan a camping holiday, even if you are planning a flexible break at several different sites. Most venues do not allow vehicle movement until 8am or after 7pm, so it is wise to arrive between these times. Late arrivals can usually be accommodated though, but travellers should call ahead to make sure that any possible friction is minimised.

Eating and drinking are also important, of course and it is a good idea to take a supply of bottled water with you, both for emergencies and to ensure that you are not left having to use the equivalent of a farm tap on some more basic sites. Easily portable and cooked food is the best thing to take, whether dehydrated or in cans. Also make sure that cooking facilities are available at a site if you are not travelling with your own stove or in a caravan with a cooker.

A caravan park is perhaps a nice compromise between staying under canvas and holidaying in a permanent building. Caravans grant a degree of flexibility, while also being a little more resilient in the case of bad weather. Caravan parks also tend to be in prime locations and to possess a good range of facilities for campers, such as showers and shops.

A resort like Haven Berwick Holiday Park offers this kind of compromise between camping and more developed facilities and any newcomers to camping should perhaps think about this type of break. But whether it is a seaside holiday park or a wild campsite on a European mountainside, there is nothing quite like the feeling it creates.
